Europolis
Europolis aims at creating a geographical information system (SIG) in order to map and compare the evolution of the population in the European towns.
If the population statistic data have been available for the majority of European countries, since 1800 for most of them, the main difficulty lies in the variety of the national definitions and representations of cities and local units from which each state makes a census of its own population.
The method enables for the first time to measure the urbanization in Europe : Europolis will be the only way to compare on the long trend the dynamics of population and the heterogeneous and specific urban forms on this continent, intensively and formerly urbanized, and politically divided.
